SybrShrimp Test Kit

SybrShrimp Test Kit is the world’s most sensitive disease diagnostic and detection kit for use by shrimp farmers. The kits detect five of the most common shrimp viruses at the molecular level by employing PCR technology. By providing advance warning to farmers and government agencies well before signs of a disease are evident, SybrShrimp will allow time for mitigation of crop loss through disease management measures to prevent the spread of the disease to other ponds and other farms. SybrShrimp also provides an excellent complement to both VPX and IMS, with the diagnostic leading to uptake of these products when disease is detected.

SYBR Shrimp diagnostic kits are available at three levels of sensitivity – Traditional PCR (TP) Quantitative PCR using molecular dyes (SG) and Quantitative PCR with Dual Labeled Probes (DL), in order of increasing detection of rare targets and specificity. Initially, the kits can detect five disease targets, with more to be added in the coming months:

White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV), documented in China, Japan, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, India and Bangladesh since 1991, in the U.S. since 1995 and in Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, Mexico, Columbia, Ecuador and Peru since 1999. The associated disease syndrome is highly virulent and can result in 80-100% mortalities in 3 to 10 days post-infection.

Infectious Hypodermal and Haematopoietic Necrosis (IHHNV), identified in Hawaii in 1983 and since documented in Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, the Philippines, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Mexico and Central America and the US. Associated with Runt Deformity Syndrome and significant mortalities in juvenile and post-larval life stages.

Taura Syndrome Virus (TSV), documented in Ecuador, Columbia, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, Mexico, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Peru and Brazil since 1992, in the U.S. since 1994 and in China and Indonesia since 1995. The disease syndrome is virulent and can result in 80-90% mortalities in particularly susceptible species.

Yellow Head Virus (YHV), documented in Thailand since 1990, and in Indonesia, Taiwan and China, the Philippines, India, Australia, Malaysia and the US. Highly virulent in Penaeus monodon with mortalities up to 100% in 3-9 days.

Gill-Associated Virus (GAV), a yellow head-like virus primarily of concern in Australia where it was identified in 1994. Tolerated at low levels in healthy populations but virulent in stressed populations with mortalities up to 100% in 3-9 days.

Salmon Therapeutics and Diagnostics

Aqua Bounty is developing improved variants of two critical salmon vaccines, a multivalent vaccine for salmon, as well as an antifungal to protect fish eggs in aquaculture settings. As part of its diagnostics laboratory development effort, Aqua Bounty is also developing diagnostics capabilities to detect up to 5 of the most common diseases in salmon.
