Pacific offers shrimp diagnostics in real time

SAN DIEGO, CA – Now shrimp growers worldwide can avoid the
risk and expense of feeding a crop that may sicken and die before
harvest or shed pathogens into uninfected water supplies. Aqua
Bounty Pacific can now provide real time quantative PCR disgnosis
for the five principal viral shrimp diseases -- White Spot, Yellow
Head, Taura Syndrome, IHHN and NHP viruses – as well as other
custom targets, with unrivaled speed and accuracy.
This mail-in
diagnostic service provides shrimp farmers with an early warning
system that identifies viral infections at levels as low as a
single molecule and as much as 30 days before any clinical symptoms
appear in the pond. The advantages of real time PCR – exceptional
speed, accuracy and sensitivity – can now be within reach
of the farmer or researcher who has not had access to the equipment
or reagents needed to use this breakthrough diagnostic technique.
Real time
PCR uses special chemical reagents and custom designed primers
and probes to detect a single copy of target DNA or RNA sequences
in samples from customers. The use of real time instrumentation
and reagents not only speeds up the time it takes to get results,
but is also 10-to-1000 times more sensitive than traditional PCR.
The greater accuracy available with the quantitative approach
virtually eliminates the “false positives” that can
reduce the value of traditional PCR. Results from most samples
can be e-mailed or faxed to the farmer within 24 hours after we
receive the sample at our San Diego lab.
During the
introduction of this service, Aqua Bounty Pacific will isolate
DNA or RNA from a customer supplied sample and perform the quantative
PCR analysis for the same price others for traditional PCR. Farmers
and researchers can now access this exceptional technology for
$35 per sample (1 to 10 samples), $30 per sample (11-20 sample
batch) or $27.50 per sample for batches over 20 or for standing
orders of 10 samples or more per week.
